Guided lessons and a beach tent steps from the waves at Playa Grande,
in the heart of Guanacaste.
With a wide variety of different surf breaks, Guanacaste is one of the best places in Costa Rica to improve as a surfer. In the region, those just starting out on a board can ride gentle waves to get a feel for the water, before transitioning to more challenging waves to push themselves to the next level.
From Las Catalinas, the nearest and most popular beach break to surf is Playa Grande. True to its name, Playa Grande is one of the longest beaches in Guanacaste, with a wide and gently curving face that opens it up to swell from all directions. If there’s swell to find, you’ll find it on Playa Grande.
Starting with the basics at this lesson, you’ll learn the board, leash, and basic safety. Then, you'll practice navigating out into the break zone, timing waves, learning to pop up, and finally balancing on the wave and riding it for yourself. Along the way, the surf instructor will be right in the surf with you, offering tips and providing a helping hand with timing waves and maintaining balance.
By the end of your lesson, you’ll have had the chance to catch your first waves, get comfortable on the board, and cool off in the shade of a beach tent afterward.
For these personalized and private surf lessons, the team will take care of every detail, from getting to the beach to riding the waves to returning at the end of the lesson.
The lesson starts with choosing the right board, usually an 8’+, 20”+ beginner board. Then, the group heads right to the beach, learning first the basics of paddling out, catching waves, and standing up, and then putting your practice to use riding your first waves.
Throughout the adventure, you can stop by a shaded personal beach tent to refresh with cold drinks.
